Zoning Appeals

 Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA)

Zoning Appeals are brought before the Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA). The BZA hears the following requests: variances, special exceptions, and appeals to alleged errors in any order, requirement, decision, or determination made by the Zoning Administrator in enforcing the Zoning Regulations. The responsibilities, powers, and duties of the BZA are outlined in Article 27 of the Zoning Regulations.

All applicants requesting an interpretation, variance or exception to the Zoning Regulations should consult with Staff prior to submitting their final application. The purpose of the consultation is to advise the applicant of his rights and responsibilities in the filing of such application.

On April 24, 2023, the Board of County Commissioners passed Resolution 2023-019 designating the Jefferson County Kansas Planning Commission to serve as the Jefferson County Board of Zoning Appeals, with meeting dates and application deadlines to coincide with established Planning Commission meeting dates and application deadlines.

All meetings are scheduled for the fourth Monday of each month and the application deadline will be on the Thursday six weeks prior to the scheduled meeting unless otherwise noted.  All Planning Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals meetings take place in the Jefferson County Courthouse on the main floor in the County Commissioners Chambers at 7:00 p.m., unless otherwise published.

**If the Board of Zoning Appeals has agenda items, those meetings shall take place immediately following the conclusion of the Planning Commission meeting. **
